# 17 My Thoughts on Web 2.0

At first I was a little hesitate about having to do all those activities. But as time went on I’m glad to have had the opportunity to learn about some of the new technology that’s available. While I don’t think I’ll be one to use Twitter I do see myself using most of the other programs. I learned about many interesting sites and once I started it got easier to continue. I want to thank everyone involved for helping us come into the 21st century. Special thanks to Nick and Jacque for all the extra time spent reviewing our activities.

# 16 Craigslist

This was the first that I looked at Craigslist. It does have a lot to offer and was very easy to search. I'm interested in collectibles so that where I did a search. The following link will bring you to this site where many different items are offered. At this time nothing caught my eye, but maybe someday I'll find that special item.

# 15 Google Docs

I really like google docs. I found it so easy to use that I hope my shared document was entered correctly. The fact that information is shared while being worked on will make it easier for projects to be completed in a shorter time. I think I’ll be giving it a try with actual documents.

# 14 Wiki

Until this activity I was only familiar with the PALS Wiki. While searching I found it interesting that there are so many wiki’s to choose from and all you really need to know is how to type. It was also the first time I used Wikipedia where I learned that wiki is the Hawaiian term for quick. It seems that a site can be found for almost any interest one might have. If we were to have a public wiki site, patrons would be able to enter a book/movie review for others to see. A wiki is also helpful in keeping all employees current with any new changes within the library.

# 13 Finding New Feeds

Of those searched in this activity I found Blogline's Search Tool and Technorati to be easy to use. Of these two, I preferred Blogline where I found feeds with plenty of information for planning vacations in Maine or New York. I think I still like Google Reader as it's pretty quick and easy to use. Maybe since I'm new to newsfeeds I really found Syndisc8 to be difficult and confusing to understand.

# 12 Discovering Feeds

I found the feeds on the staff catalog to be very useful. Besides having journals and reviews available at a click, one can also access current headlines or find community information searching either staff, public or local feeds. I guess this would be helpful at the reference desk for quick responses to patron questions. The RSS symbol was easily found on the bottom of our Website. I'm sure patrons will enjoy using the feeds to be kept informed of current programs or new movies/books. Since doing this activity I became aware of the mobile feature on our website and found it to be interesting. I guess those who are currently using new technology would be sure to us it. Who knows, maybe I'll use it one day.

#11 RSS Feed Readers

Once I searched the MMSCLTeens Google Reader I realized this was something I might like to do. I used my own account and subscribed to a couple of feeds. I also added them to the staff folder. Italian recipes, DVD TAlk and Theater Mania were a few selected. All stage entertainment fascinates me so I was happy to add www.theatermania.com. Some of the information available included reviews for comedy, drama, and music for performances on Broadway and other states as well.

# 10 SuffolkWave

I was never a fan of audiobooks, so I don't think I'll be searching SuffolkWave for this format. I would rather hold a book to read it, so perhaps someday I'll download an eBook to a portable device. I did go though the guided tour and found it very helpful. Downloading was alot quicker than I thought it would be. I decided I would like to download music to an IPod. My choice was Vivaldi:The Four Seasons as I find this to help with meditation. I can see where people would perfer to download material, it's easier to take on the go.

# 9 Flickr

I think after reviewing Flickr that it may be something I'll like to use. I was surprised to learn of the many different ways one can tag and then share their photos. I chose Tusany sunflowers because it reminded me of my trip to Italy and while traveling through Tusany we did see many beautiful scenes as this one. Arrivederci!

# 8 YouTube Video

At first I wasn't sure what I would search for. Then I searched for pictures of my old Queens neighborhood and found them. I even looked at videos from concerts that I attended. I then realized the searches were endless so I looked for one of the most talented actors and my favorite; Paul Newman. By adding his video to my blog I can always look back and remember his great movies and of course those blue eyes.
I believe the library can use YouTube as a learning tool not only because so many people already seem to be familiar with it, but one wouldn't even have to leave their home to access a tutorial video.

#7-Library Thing

I can see where people, especially an avid reader may find this useful. I did find it interesting enough to creat a "library" and entered Grapes of Wrath, Polar Express and Dewey: the Small Town Cat... just for this exercise. I haven't decided if I'll be using it.

# 6-Delicious

I found this to be quite easy. I really like trying new recipes so the food network got my attention. I can see how using the tag cloud in our OPAC can be helpful when searching for a certain genre or just looking for the current bestsellers. It's also interesting to see which tags are most used by the size of the word.

# 5-Myspace and Facebook

It was interesting to see that I was one of 125 "fans" of the library on Facebook. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised to see that quite a few libraries within and outside of suffolk are on facebook, NYPL being among them. Looking at Facebook and MySpace I found that both sites were very clean looking which made navigating easy. Both the library MySpace and Teen page have wonderful tools that not only let you view photos from past programs but also give descriptions of future programs.
I found Facebook and MySpace to be similar in that you can connect to people near and far in a matter of seconds. I think there might be more flexability with creating in MySpace than Facebook.
If I were to create an account it would probably be Facebook, not only did I find it more interesting but I know many family and friends who have recently signed on.
I think people find these sites interesting because we have become a "I want it now" society.
The sites can be used as additional means of getting information out to the public.

# 4- Twittering

I don't believe I'll be doing much twittering. My comment in the library's account was " I'm working, not much time to twitter"

# 3-Create a Blog

Okay, blog away! It's not as difficult as you may think.
